Chatting With Ghosts – Part 2

Continuing the conversation about Chatting With Ghosts that was in Part 1…
My darling husband Mark has been with me for almost 16 years and he is quite familiar with my past and present interaction with ghosts and he has heard me address them aloud many times. Other than sporadic interaction with one of the resident ghosts in his now-retired father’s former 17th century pub in England, The Gin Trap Inn, Mark has never really had ghosts as part of his daily life.
As related in Part 1, we had encounters with a ghost named Charles in our house in the USA, but Mark only felt him and never saw him. It was always me that had the heart-jolting visual moments when Charles would suddenly appear in a mirror or the glass of a picture and glower at me.
We now live in a small village in Central Victoria in Australia and many of the homes in this former gold mining town are quite old. Mark restores houses for a living and he is in and out of buildings from many eras. But the one that he was working in last week was actually only about 40 years old. What it did have in common with our house in the USA was that it had been owner-built and the man had died a few years ago leaving his widow to reside in a house that now needed some serious maintenance and repair.
Amongst the tasks that he needed to attend to last week was getting one of the doors to close correctly against the metal striker plate. He had been conversing with the client between the other work of replastering walls and she had been grumbling about her late husband and his workmanship in building the house. “I don’t know what he thought he was doing!” Mark laughed and told her it was fine to grumble about it now since he wasn’t around any more — and shortly after that statement, his day began to go awry.
He was holding the striker plate in his hand as he stood next to his van, getting a new screw and the cordless drill, and the plate slipped out of his hand and onto the ground immediately beneath him. As he bent down to pick it up, it simply wasn’t there. He got down on his hands and knees and searched the area but no, no striker plate. Standing up again, Mark made sure that the piece hadn’t tumbled into the back of the van instead and then he got down on his hands and knees a second time and ran his hands over the bare ground. Nope! No striker plate.
Mark was getting quite perplexed at this point, thinking that he would have to drive into the next larger village that had a hardware store to purchase a replacement piece, but as he walked away from the van, he turned around for one final search of the ground. There on the ground, shining up at him, was the striker plate in exactly the spot that he had already perused thoroughly and run his hands over twice previously.
Shaking his head, he picked it up and took it to the door with the new screws to install it. But as he began to work, the cordless drill bit slid right off of that brand new screw with its unworn and very crisp slots and into the nail of one of his fingers. Ouch!
Mark had a strong sensation of being watched and he stopped suddenly, looked around quickly, and thought to himself, “Damn. That husband is here!”
He immediately stopped what he was doing, remembered some of the things that he had heard me say to ghosts in the past, and mentally talked to the ghost saying, “OK, I acknowledge your presence. I didn’t mean any offense. I’m just here to fix things for your wife, do good work, and not rip her off — I promise!”
Mark waited and he said the air became more peaceful. Then he went back to work and everything flowed extremely smoothly for the rest of the afternoon.
It may have been as simple as the fact that some other man was working on the house that HE had built, or it may have been the grumbling that he heard from his wife and Mark’s off the cuff statement that it didn’t matter since the late husband wasn’t around any more, but some factor stirred that ghost into movement last week. Mark never had the feeling that any ill will was aimed at him, but he certainly had a sensation that the ghost wanted to be acknowledged as still being around and definitely still being in charge of what went on in that house!
